What is Skilled Nursing Care?

Skilled nursing care is a level of healthcare that requires the expertise of licensed nurses and other health care professionals to provide direct medical care and management. It's more intensive than basic personal care or custodial care and is typically needed by individuals recovering from surgery, illness, or injury, or those managing chronic conditions.

Key Features of Skilled Nursing Care:

  • Provided by Licensed Professionals: This care is provided by Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), and other licensed professionals.

  • Direct Medical Care: This goes beyond basic assistance with daily living. It involves treatments and monitoring that require specialized training and skills.

  • Goal-Oriented: Skilled nursing care is typically designed to help individuals recover, manage their conditions, and improve their overall health and well-being.

  • Temporary or Long-Term: The duration of skilled nursing care can vary depending on the individual's needs, from short-term rehabilitation to long-term management of chronic conditions.
